  • About Hayley Ryan | Ivy Trove Creative Workshops & Macramé

Meet Hayley Ryan, the creative human behind Ivy Trove. Learn about the journey, values and passion for macramé workshops, creativity, connection and calm. About Hayley Ryan Hello you! I’m Hayley Ryan — the cheeky, plant-obsessed, creatively chaotic human behind Ivy Trove. I’ve been turning creativity into connection since 2018, teaching macramé, hosting workshops, and creating beautiful, feel-good experiences that bring people together. Ivy Trove began as a love of handmade home décor and quickly grew into something much bigger — community, confidence, calm, and a whole lot of laughter along the way. How Ivy Trove Came to Life Ivy Trove was born in October 2018, selling handmade macramé home décor. Not long after, I hosted my very first in-person workshop on 30.3.2019 — a pot hanger and plant potting class that kicked off what would become a wild, wonderful journey. Since then, Ivy Trove has grown to include: Public and private workshops DIY kits and step-by-step tutorials Online workshops and live classes Collaborations and large-scale commission pieces To date, I’ve hosted 175+ workshops, events and commissions, teaching 1500+ creative humans both in person and online — and I’m only just getting started. Ivy Trove is completely mobile, which means I get to pack up my van and bring workshops to people across the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Northern Rivers, Byron Bay, and beyond — plus live online sessions with creatives all over the world. A Little About Me (the Human Bit) I was born on the Central Coast of NSW, moved to country Victoria at seven, then up to the Gold Coast where I finished school in 2006. Since then, I’ve lived in two countries, three Australian states, and worked across a wide range of industries. As the middle of three girls and a bit of a gypsy at heart, I’m naturally extroverted and deeply curious. I love meeting people, connecting dots, sharing stories, learning new skills — and having a good laugh while doing all of the above. This turned out to be very lucky, because teaching something I love — and sharing the calming, grounding magic of macramé — has been an absolute dream. Where It All Really Started In 2017, while studying my Diploma of Horticulture, I had a little side hobby designing and selling terrariums. The glass globes came with boring bits of string to hang them… so naturally, I went searching for something better. That’s when I stumbled across the timeless, historic art of macramé (Mac-rah-may, Ma-cra-may… same same). Sitting on the floor with a roll of jute twine, a YouTube tutorial, and far too much inch-to-centimetre conversion, I was instantly hooked. What started as a better way to hang plants quickly turned into pot hangers, wall hangings, and a full-blown obsession. Creativity, Calm & Connection I’ve always been a plant lady (and a proud one). I’m also a collector of antiques, vintage and retro treasures, records, ceramics, quirky furniture, books, plants, and all the little trinkets in between — especially if they’re second-hand. A good op-shop haul brings me deep joy. I’m the only left-hander in my family, have ADHD & OCD (Heyyyy), and have never been great at sitting still. Over the years I’ve tried countless creative outlets — terrariums, plant styling, mosaics, resin, drawing weird abstract things, sun catchers, cooking, eating, and of course, macramé. What I discovered through macramé was something bigger than creativity: focus, calm, and mental clarity. For the first time, my mind slowed down. Knot by knot, it became a form of therapy — and that’s when I knew this wasn’t just a hobby, but a passion I wanted to share. Giving Back & Being Earth-Conscious Leading from my own journey, I proudly donated $1 from every public workshop ticket to the Black Dog Institute, supporting mental health research and development. Ivy Trove has always been guided by care — for people and for the planet. I’m proud to own a plastic-free business, using 100% recycled cotton cord, sourcing local and recycled materials where possible, propagating my own plants, and supporting local growers. Leftover cord cuttings, cardboard spools, and creative materials are donated to local day-care centres and schools to be reused for arts and crafts — because it all adds up. Come Create With Me Ivy Trove workshops are welcoming, beginner-friendly (unless stated otherwise), and designed for everyone. You don’t need experience — just a smidge of patience, an open mind, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Expect a creative escape guided by someone who doesn’t take life too seriously, but has plenty of tricks up her sleeve to make you feel comfortable, supported, and proud of what you create. Come ignite a new passion, slow down, connect, and enjoy a well-deserved creative moment. It won’t be boring — I promise. If you’ve made it all the way down here — thank you 🧡 If you have any questions or want to know more, please don’t hesitate to get in touch anytime. Cheers and love, Hayley x Ivy Trove is based in Southeast Queensland, offering workshops, kits & custom décor locally + online. Explore Workshops View Past Projects 100% Recycled Cotton The cords I use during my workshops or for my pieces are 100% recycled cotton. Re-recycling donations The left-over cord cuttings and spools are donated to local day cares & schools to be reused for their arts & crafts. Locally Sourced Supporting local as much as possible: pots, plants, wooden rings, driftwood + so much more Ivy : Flourishes in most environments, super hardy and beautiful. They help purify the air, repel most plant pests, easy to propagate and each new leaf will produce a different pattern, just like us. Unique & Individual! Trove : A place where valuable, useful and delightful things can be found. 1/9

Have a read of some blogs and find out about some of the unique and epic challenges we've been lucky enough to be a part of (unsure if I'll ever finish this page haha, forever a work in progress!) Woman's Day Magazine - Aug 2019 Shortly after I launched Ivy Trove I was asked to create a 2 page article on 'Make your own Macrame Hanger'. Whuuutt?? This was well before my DIY kit days and gosh how different it would be now if I got the chance. Such an incredible experience so early on! NAIDOC Festival UQ University - Aug 2019 I was invited by the Diversity and Inclusion department to host the Yarn and Yarn activation. We created 2 huge pieces where anyone attending the festival could come and add a few knots to the installations. I then took both unfinished pieces home and improvised the completion of the wall hangings based on what had already been knotted. An epic challenge to say the least and they proudly hang in the Diversity and Inclusion department at Brisbane UQ! Brisbane Botanica Festival - Oct 2021 I got invited to host an incredible collaborative art project alongside Georgia Hillas, the creative spark behind the idea 'Aim Higher'! It was originally in 2020 but sadly c-vid restrictions cancelled it. Georgia tirelessly strung up each Netball hoop in different colours then I taught 23 woman how to create the knots then it was choose your own adventure from there as I guided everyone through their sections. The results were unbelievable! Once the unique creations were completed they were dipped in neon paint for the 'wow factor' at night and hung at all different heights on the Circle of Tall Palms. This fun and interactive project was an amazing success which allowed people to shoot hoops at all different levels as well as admire the stunning handmade pieces hanging up in their glory! There's a peak on the Brisbane City Youtube channel too! Ravenswood Woman in Art Campaign LEAF Festival Child Care centre events Allied Health Alfred Health Koala Eco photoshoot I was commissioned to create a design completely from free flow and personal style based on seeing photos of the beautiful eclectic Bed & Breakfast lodge called Noosa Hinterland Escape in Black Mountain.
