About Hayley Ryan

Hello you!

I’m Hayley Ryan — the cheeky, plant-obsessed, creatively chaotic human behind Ivy Trove.

I’ve been turning creativity into connection since 2018, teaching macramé, hosting workshops, and creating beautiful, feel-good experiences that bring people together. Ivy Trove began as a love of handmade home décor and quickly grew into something much bigger — community, confidence, calm, and a whole lot of laughter along the way.

How Ivy Trove Came to Life

Ivy Trove was born in October 2018, selling handmade macramé home décor. Not long after, I hosted my very first in-person workshop on 30.3.2019 — a pot hanger and plant potting class that kicked off what would become a wild, wonderful journey.

Since then, Ivy Trove has grown to include:

  • Public and private workshops

  • DIY kits and step-by-step tutorials

  • Online workshops and live classes

  • Collaborations and large-scale commission pieces

To date, I’ve hosted 175+ workshops, events and commissions, teaching 1500+ creative humans both in person and online — and I’m only just getting started.

Ivy Trove is completely mobile, which means I get to pack up my van and bring workshops to people across the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Northern Rivers, Byron Bay, and beyond — plus live online sessions with creatives all over the world.

A Little About Me (the Human Bit)

I was born on the Central Coast of NSW, moved to country Victoria at seven, then up to the Gold Coast where I finished school in 2006. Since then, I’ve lived in two countries, three Australian states, and worked across a wide range of industries.

As the middle of three girls and a bit of a gypsy at heart, I’m naturally extroverted and deeply curious.

I love meeting people, connecting dots, sharing stories, learning new skills — and having a good laugh while doing all of the above.

This turned out to be very lucky, because teaching something I love — and sharing the calming, grounding magic of macramé — has been an absolute dream.

Where It All Really Started

In 2017, while studying my Diploma of Horticulture, I had a little side hobby designing and selling terrariums. The glass globes came with boring bits of string to hang them… so naturally, I went searching for something better.

That’s when I stumbled across the timeless, historic art of macramé (Mac-rah-may, Ma-cra-may… same same). Sitting on the floor with a roll of jute twine, a YouTube tutorial, and far too much inch-to-centimetre conversion, I was instantly hooked.

What started as a better way to hang plants quickly turned into pot hangers, wall hangings, and a full-blown obsession.

Creativity, Calm & Connection

I’ve always been a plant lady (and a proud one). I’m also a collector of antiques, vintage and retro treasures, records, ceramics, quirky furniture, books, plants, and all the little trinkets in between — especially if they’re second-hand. A good op-shop haul brings me deep joy.

I’m the only left-hander in my family, have ADHD & OCD (Heyyyy), and have never been great at sitting still. Over the years I’ve tried countless creative outlets — terrariums, plant styling, mosaics, resin, drawing weird abstract things, sun catchers, cooking, eating, and of course, macramé.

What I discovered through macramé was something bigger than creativity: focus, calm, and mental clarity. For the first time, my mind slowed down. Knot by knot, it became a form of therapy — and that’s when I knew this wasn’t just a hobby, but a passion I wanted to share.

Giving Back & Being Earth-Conscious

Leading from my own journey, I proudly donated $1 from every public workshop ticket to the Black Dog Institute, supporting mental health research and development.

Ivy Trove has always been guided by care — for people and for the planet.

I’m proud to own a plastic-free business, using 100% recycled cotton cord, sourcing local and recycled materials where possible, propagating my own plants, and supporting local growers.

Leftover cord cuttings, cardboard spools, and creative materials are donated to local day-care centres and schools to be reused for arts and crafts — because it all adds up.

Come Create With Me

Ivy Trove workshops are welcoming, beginner-friendly (unless stated otherwise), and designed for everyone. You don’t need experience — just a smidge of patience, an open mind, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

Expect a creative escape guided by someone who doesn’t take life too seriously, but has plenty of tricks up her sleeve to make you feel comfortable, supported, and proud of what you create.

Come ignite a new passion, slow down, connect, and enjoy a well-deserved creative moment.

It won’t be boring — I promise.

If you’ve made it all the way down here — thank you 🧡

If you have any questions or want to know more, please don’t hesitate to get in touch anytime.

Cheers and love,

Hayley x
